When it comes to your metabolism, the adage that goes, “you are what you eat,” is fairly accurate! Your metabolism is responsible for converting everything you consume into energy, which in turn is used by virtually every single bodily process to keep you alive, moving, and thriving day in and day out. As such, there are innumerable benefits to improving your metabolic health! Our metabolic health specialists at Transform Alliance for Health would be delighted to help you get started on this journey.

What is metabolic health?

When you hear a medical expert talk about your metabolism, they are referring to the bodily process that converts the food, liquid, and nutrients that you consume into energy. Every part of your body then uses this energy to function correctly, from breathing and blood circulation to cell growth and reparation. As such, a healthy or unhealthy metabolism affects every aspect of your health! In a study completed last year (2019), researchers showed that only 12% of Americans had a healthy metabolism, which they defined as having optimal blood sugar levels, blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, and waist circumference. With that in mind, seeking a healthy metabolism is a pertinent issue in our society today!

Is metabolic testing accurate?

Metabolic testing uses a handful of tests that assess your metabolic health, including your resting metabolic rate (RMR), your aerobic capacity (VO2 Max), which analyzes how well your body uses oxygen during exercise, and how quickly your blood produces lactic acid during exercise (lactate threshold test). While these tests can provide accurate and beneficial information about your metabolic health, the test must be conducted by a qualified medical professional who has the skill and training to run the test and adequately analyze the results. The accuracy of metabolic testing is directly related to the specialist’s skill and experience in conducting the tests.

Here at Transform Alliance for Health, our medical director, Dr. Vyvyane Loh, is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine! As such, she has all the experience, education, and training required to flawlessly perform metabolic testing and skillfully interpret the test results.

What is a good resting metabolism?

Your resting metabolism rate is a measure of how well your body uses the energy sources you consume when it is at rest. While a healthy resting metabolism rate is mostly dependent on the individual in question and their muscle mass and body size, the average RMR for men is above 1600 calories per day for men and 1400 calories per day for women. The difference in metabolic rate between men and women is mostly due to differences in muscle mass. As such, it is not a cut and dried statistic. When you come to Transform Alliance for Health, one of our doctors can determine a target resting metabolic rate for you, given your weight, age, and muscle mass.
