Have you ever wondered what exactly is stress? Stress is the body’s way of responding to any experience that has any sort of demand. It can be caused by something that is good and something that is bad. When people feel stressed by something that is going on around them, their bodies will react by releasing specific chemicals into their blood. This is also known as a type of adrenaline. These chemicals give people more energy and more physical strength, which could potentially be a good thing if their stress is being caused by a physical danger. But, however, this can also be a bad thing, if their stress is due to something emotional. This will cause a build of stress where there is no outlet to release this extra energy and strength.
There are many different things that can cause a person stress – from physical (such as fear of something) to emotional (such as worry). Identifying what is causing you stress is often the first step in knowing how to better deal with it. Some of the most common reasons that people stress are:
– Survival Stress: The best way to describe this is “fight or flight”. It is described as when a person is afraid that someone or something can physically hurt them. Your body will naturally react in two ways, either you will stay and try to handle to situation, or you will leave the situation all together.
– Internal Stress: This is when a person worries about things that they can do nothing about, or perhaps worrying for no reason at all. This is one of the most important kinds of stress for a person to understand and manage. Internal stress is when people go out of their way to make themselves stressed.
– Environmental Stress: This is the body’s response to the things around a person that cause stress – such as noise, over-crowding, and pressures from work or the family. Being able to identify these stresses will allow a person to alleviate any feelings of stress.
– Fatigue and Overwork: This type of stress will build up over a long period of time and will take a hard toll on your body. This is typically caused by working too much or too hard at job(s), school, or home. This is typically the hardest kind of stress to avoid because many people tend to feel that this is out of their control.
Stress-related disorders can include different mental health disorders that are resulting from the person having a response to both short and long-term anxiety. This can be due to the person having physical, mental, and/or emotional stress. These disorders include, but are not limited to – obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
